What people usually mean by a vintage kitchen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A vintage kitchen usually means old furniture that has been found and put back in order. The idea is easy to understand: such furniture has a history and does not look like the neighbour\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where old furniture runs into a working kitchen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A kitchen stands on measurements that are not up for debate. The worktop sits at 900 mm, base cabinets are 570 mm deep, and built-in appliances need a recess of their own: a dishwasher takes 450\u00d7550\u00d7815 or 600\u00d7550\u00d7815 mm. Add a 50 mm drain and a separate 25 amp breaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old cabinets were built to different dimensions and for different appliances. As soon as you try to fit a current oven or dishwasher into them, the carcass has to be built again \u2014 and only the outer layer of the old furniture is left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second thing is wood. Unprotected timber darkens in the light, which is why we use materials with UV protection. Furniture found second-hand usually has no such protection, and within a couple of years the colour goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What carries over from the idea into a new kitchen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What carries over is not the furniture but two properties. The first is open storage: a shelf or a pantry where you can see what stands inside. The second is wood on show, in the back panel or the shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is enough to keep the kitchen from looking anonymous. There is no need to dress the whole run in the theme: the carcass, the appliances and the dimensions stay current, and one or two details carry the character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
