A kitchen for Christmas and New Year: shelves and tableware
For Christmas and New Year, a few everyday items in the kitchen can make way for festive tableware. An existing open shelf or glass-fronted cupboard can hold it. Before taking the dishes out, choose a place for them and decide where to put the things already there. That leaves room in the kitchen to prepare a festive meal too.
Tableware on an open shelf
In our Renna kitchen, open shelves sit at the end of a row of tall cabinets. They hold books, decanters and personal objects. For Christmas, a shelf like this could display festive cups or a small serving dish in place of a few everyday items.
Tableware stays visible on an open shelf, so choose pieces you would like to see and use during the holidays. The rest of the set can wait in a cupboard with a solid door until it is time to lay the table. If the kitchen has no open shelf, festive dishes can go straight from the cupboard to the table without taking up a permanent spot on the worktop.
Worktop space for festive cooking
Before the holidays, the worktop is needed for rolling dough, a chopping board and baking trays. Keeping festive tableware on a shelf leaves that area clear. Cups placed temporarily on the worktop can sit together on a tray, ready to move to the dining table before cooking. Choose a spot for the tray where it will not obstruct cupboard doors or drawers.
Storing festive tableware after the holidays
If Christmas tableware is used for just one month of the year, it needs a place in a closed cupboard for the other eleven. A section of shelf can be cleared before the holidays, ready for the dishes to return clean and dry. Keep heavy serving dishes lower down, where they can be lifted securely with both hands. In January, books and decanters can return to the open shelf.

In the showroom, you can open cupboard doors and drawers, touch the surfaces and check the depth of the shelves. This lets you see how cups and a large serving dish would fit in a cupboard and how easily you could take them out.
